LAB - Hardy-Weinberg and Natural Selection
This lab was created for science high school students in the Simi Valley Unified School District. The lab accompanies SLIDES - Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium.
The Hardy-Weinberg principle states that allele and genotype frequencies remain stable in a population over generations if the population meets certain conditions. When conditions are met, the population is stable, and in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. By comparing allele frequencies over generations, scientists can determine if evolution is occurring. In this lab, students simulate predator-prey relationships and reproduction. By using allele frequencies generated in each trial, also called a generation, students can compare two populations to determine if the population may be evolving.
Students work in groups for each trial. They utilize the Hardy-Weinberg equation to determine how allele frequencies may be changing over time. A word bank, bolded key vocabulary, partners, and sample response Table provides support for ELL/UDL needs.
