SLIDES - Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium

This slide set was developed for high school students in the Simi Valley Unified School District for direct instruction.

Students learn the assumptions of a non-evolving population when in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. Then, they apply mathematics to determine if genetic changes are occurring in a population when assumptions are not met. The Hardy-Weinberg equation is illustrated with examples.

Three activies are embedded in the presentation including an EdPuzzle, Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium with the Amoeba Sisters. A handout provides students with practice problems for Hardy-Weinberg calculations. Students then apply these concepts in the Hardy-Weinberg and Natural Selection Lab. This slide set, practice problems, and lab pre-teaches required genetics vocabulary, includes word banks, and highlights key vocabulary.
