Objective:

  • Teach students to recognize, segment, blend, and read words with consonant blends, focusing on L-blends.

Key Concepts:

  • Definition of Blends: Two or more consonants together, where each retains its sound.
  • Types of Blends:
    • L-Blends: sl, gl, fl, cl, pl (e.g., flag, slug)
    • S-Blends: st (e.g., stop)
    • R-Blends: gr, cr (e.g., crab)

Activities:

  1. Introduction to L-Blends: Explain and practice common L-blends.
  2. Segmenting & Blending Words: Break words into sounds and blend them back together (e.g., /sl/ /u/ /g/ = slug).
  3. Phonemic Awareness:
    • Blending: Teacher gives sounds; students blend them into words.
    • Segmenting: Students break words into individual sounds.
  4. Building Words: Students use whiteboards to write and build words with L-blends.
  5. Reading Passage Activity:
