Lab: Centripetal Force

This is a lab to investigate centripetal force. There is a lab guide and two scaffolded sheets to be used to help students write the lab report. I also have included a sample student lab report for the teacher and/or students to model their report from.

Notes for Teacher:

  1. Materials needed per group: Mass set, fishing line, ruler, metal washer, stop watch, 3” PVC pipe with ½” diameter, goggles
  2. This lab requires a demonstration of how to properly count the revolutions. Students tend to count these incorrectly. Modeling how to properly count will help with error.
  3. Students must wear goggles in this lab.
  4. Students may need help setting up their graphs. They will need instruction on how to do a best fit line as well as how to take the slope of that best fit line.
  5. Check the lesson for a student sample of a complete lab report.
  6. Both scaffolds provided are to help facilitate writing the lab report. Students can use the two additional sheets to help build a complete lab report.
