"The Souls of Black Folk," W.E.B. Du Bois JIGSAW READING
In this jigsaw reading lesson, students will explore W.E.B. Du Bois' The Souls of Black Folk through a close reading of four key chapters. Teachers should arrange students into groups of four, with each group receiving a chapter summary and two excerpts to read, annotate, and analyze using the provided annotation guide and vocabulary chart. After students in homogenous groups finish reading and analyzing their excerpts, create heterogeneous groups, ensuring each member has read a different excerpt. In these mixed groups, students will share their insights and discuss the final group question: How do the themes in these excerpts from Du Bois' writing explore identity, perception, and the struggle for recognition? Teachers should facilitate the group discussions, guiding students as they synthesize ideas and contribute to the final discussion.
