Task Cards: Standard Form
This 3rd grade Resource was designed for students in Kern County at an expanding level.
Help your 3rd-grade students master writing numbers in standard form with this engaging set of Standard Form Task Cards! Aligned with CCSS 3.NBT.1, these task cards challenge students to round numbers to the nearest ten and hundred and build essential number sense skills.
This set includes:
- 32 task cards
- Answer key for quick and easy checking.
- Student recording sheet for independent work or accountability during activities.
Flexible Use Options:
- Small Group Games: Use these task cards in small groups for math centers or as part of a friendly competition. For example, students can play a "war" style game where they each choose a card, write their number in standard form, and the student with the "greater" number wins the round.
- Whole Group Activities: Incorporate them into whole-group instruction by projecting a card and having students hold up answer cards or write answers on mini whiteboards.
- Move and Learn: Spread the cards around the room in a "Scoot" activity! Students walk to each card, solve the problem, and record their answers on their sheets, adding movement and fun to the learning process.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Strategies:
- Multiple Means of Representation: Place value cards are included to support students.
- Multiple Means of Action and Expression: Students can record answers in multiple ways—writing, drawing symbols, or even verbalizing their answer in pair-share activities.
English Language Development (ELD) Support:
- Language Frames: Provide sentence starters like, "The number is written as ____, which means it has ____ hundreds, ____ tens, and ____ ones. In standard form, the number is ____." This helps students articulate their reasoning while practicing academic language.
- Collaborative Pair Work: Pair ELLs with peers to discuss their reasoning before recording answers, fostering meaningful interaction and oral language practice.
With these task cards, students will build confidence and mastery in writing numbers in Standard Form, whether learning independently, collaborating with peers, or engaging in active, hands-on math practice!
