Number Line Word Problems

This is a resource for enriching 1st grade students who are learning about using a number line to add and subtract in word problems.  These prompts challenge students to subtract in steps, encouraging them to break down multi-step problems on the number line while keeping the scenarios fun and relatable! I also included some simple one step addition problems.

ELD Supports

Provide sentence frames for ELD students to help verbalize their thinking. For example:

  • There were __, and __ more joined. Now there are __ in total.
  • I started with __, and __ were added. Altogether, there are __.
  • I had____ then _____. Now I have _____left

Here are some UDL supports:

Multiple Means of Representation

Use a number line as a visual support to help students count on and see the addition happening as they solve each problem.

Multiple Means of Engagement:

Make the activity more interactive by incorporating movement, such as having students physically move manipulatives to represent adding.
