ELPAC Fall Writing Practice
These writing prompts are designed for 1st-grade students who are at the emerging or expanding levels of English language development (DELD). The prompts are modeled after the ELPAC writing assessment. In each prompt, students first complete the missing initial letters in a sentence, then write a second sentence describing details from a picture. The prompts are engaging and themed for fall, making them enjoyable for students while also aligning with fall classroom content. The pack includes prompts featuring pumpkins, spiders, bats, and apples. I would use these as a warm-up during designated ELD. Use an engaging non-fiction book to pair with each prompt to build background knowledge and have collaborative conversations before writing.
Here are some UDL supports:
Multiple Means of Representation
Visual supports: Provide picture clues (pumpkins, spiders, bats, apples) to enhance understanding and make the writing prompts more accessible to ELL students.
Modeling sentence structure: Offer sentence starters or examples of completed sentences to show students what is expected.
Multiple Means of Action and Expression
Collaborative learning: Pair students to work together on the prompts, allowing peer support and opportunities for language-rich interaction.
Differentiated scaffolding: For students at different language proficiency levels, provide varying levels of support, such as a word bank for filling in the missing initials or sentence frames for writing their own sentence.
