In order to avoid the “danger of the single story,” (Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche), we sometimes have to dig deeper to see the various aspects that make up a whole person’s identity. In this way, we can connect also to figures who have struggled for justice and students who are on the margins can see themselves in their narratives.
In this lesson, students will learn about Dolores Huerta’s biography and successes, explaining how the aspects of her identity, including her youth, work, and influences, have impacted her activism. They choose to research one aspect further with a partner and report findings to the class. They then prepare and share their own identities in the form of an Identity chart, or “Flor de Identidad,” where they can creatively display various parts of themselves, both visible and invisible, and how each is important to them. They show appreciation for the diversity of their class community.
