When I was growing up during my elementary years in the late 70's, there was an old film that we saw in class that framed the earth's history as a single day (24 hours), and it was really effective at pointing out the very limited amount of time in which humans have even existed as related to the age of our planet. 

This is a more contemporary version of that short video put out by Discovery that does a pretty good job making this point evident.
