Madam C. J. Walker's World

Madam C.J. Walker (born Sarah Breedlove, 1867-1919) is widely known for her success in the beauty industry which made her one of the first African American millionaires. Walker was successful but she was not the first, nor was she the last Black women who made major contributions to the Black beauty industry. This learning lab provides a view into Madam C.J. Walker’s world—a world that included women who came before her and from whom she learned (and competed with) like Annie Turnbo Malone (1869-1957) as well as women who came after and continued her legacy, like Marjorie Stewart Joyner (1896-1994). The lab asks learners to consider connections between  race, class, identity, beauty and health; personal empowerment and entrepreneurship; and success, giving, and community organizing.
