Where Are We? Ch. 4: The Coriolis Effect | Genius by Stephen Hawking

In this clip from Genius by Stephen Hawking, the volunteers learn where the Milky Way is in the cosmos.

In the 16th century, a Polish astronomer named Copernicus challenged the assumption that the Earth is at the center of the solar system. He presented the idea that the Earth was rotating and the sun is the central point of the solar system.

The volunteers come to terms with this theory by engaging in a demonstration of the Coriolis Effect. The spinning machine shows that the spinning, and your perception of the universe, is down to a matter of perspective unless you have a fixed reference point.
