Gary Stevens: Visual Arts (Sculpture)

Deep in the Santa Cruz mountains are some of California's greatest natural wonders -- redwood trees, some of them thousands of years old. These are the raw materials of Gary Stevens' artwork. But only certain trees yield the unique patterns he's searching for. Gary started out as a carpenter and has been working with wood for more than 30 years. Once he stumbled across the ancient burls in his own backyard, he found the inspiration he needed to create works that are uniquely his. Instead of seeing flaws in the wood as problems to deal with, he incorporates them into his work. Original air date: July 2004.
