Teaching Evolution with Ken Bingman

In this video segment from Teaching Evolution Case Studies, high school teacher Ken Bingman uses a research and presentation activity to introduce students to evolution. Students select among topics in evolution they have generated, such as descent with modification, the fossil record, or the Human Genome Project. They research by consulting sources (such as scientific journals, books, and the Internet) to identify relevant vocabulary and concepts. The students then present their topics. When his students reveal misconceptions, Bingman helps his students examine their reasoning. He remarks separately that he has a general obligation to challenge students’ thinking, and to do so in a way that is both polite and sensitive. He also says that learning about students’ misconceptions helps him teach better.
